322   ImageFournier Forgery Album. No. 396, containing approximately 3,000 items comprising unused and used singles, multiples and many surcharges and cancels, appears to be complete except for four empty spaces, pages in blue binder with "Album De Fac-Similés Edité Par L'Union Philatélique de Genève" embossed in gold on front cover, some cover wear mostly along edges and breaking of the tabs that attach the cover to the posts, but this does not affect the spine or the integrity of the pages, inside of front cover with H.E. Harris article affixed by old scotch tape

VERY FINE. A DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THE FOURNIER FORGERY ALBUM. ONLY 480 ALBUMS WERE MADE.

According to Varro Tyler's Philatelic Forgers, Their Lives and Works, Fournier, unlike many of his contemporary forgers, did not seek to defraud the public. He described his material as facsimiles and promoted it to collectors who could not afford to purchase genuine items and to uneducated collectors as a preventive measure against being deceived by dishonest stamp dealers.

When Fournier died in 1917, one of his employees, Charles Hirschburger, unsuccessfully tried to continue the business. When Hirschburger died in 1927, L'Union Philatélique de Genève purchased the Fournier stock, which weighed over 800 pounds, from Hirschburger's widow. The Union then marked the forgeries with "FAUX" handstamps on the front and/or "Facsimile" on the reverse, and employed students from the Geneva School of Arts and Crafts to mount representative selections of the forgeries in 480 albums. Whatever was not placed into one of the books was burned to ashes.

Because Fournier made forgeries from such a wide variety of countries, many of the 480 books have either been divided into country references or have had many items removed. Very few remain intact or have the degree of completeness of this book. (Image)

Postal stationery entire used with -1/2a Blue, 1a Brown and 4a Green (20, 22, 24, SG 54, 58, 64), tied by "Virduputty May 13" circular datestamps with "S M-2" in grids and addressed to Palestine, Lebanon, and missent to Labuan, back of cover with plethora of circular datestamps including Bombay (May 17), Galle (May 17), Singapore (May 27), Labuan (May 26), Port-Said (Aug. 5 and 18), Jaffa (Aug. 19) and Beirut (Sept. 17), blue "POSTE FRANCAISE, JERUSALEM" with cross handstamp, manuscript "Missent to Labuan" on back and with clarification of address on front, some slight edgewear but in excellent condition given the circumstances of its journey

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE USE FROM INDIA TO LEBANON, WHICH WAS MISSENT TO LABUAN. A PHENOMENAL COVER.

According to an accompanying analysis, the destination was evidently misread by the postal clerk in Bombay, who would have been more familiar with Borneo than with the Levant. It went to Galle and was carried on the P & O's Khedive to Singapore, where the error in sending was also not identified. It was then carried by local sailing vessels to Labuan. In Labuan it was labelled missent, and the address was clarified to eliminate any additional confusion. It then made its way from Labuan to Lebanon. It went thru Port Said on Aug. 5 and may have been undeliverable so went back to Port Said on Aug. 18 on its way back to the sender. In the absence of any return to sender markings it was then sent to Jaffa and then to the French postal agent in Jerusalem, who apparently held it for a month before sending it to Beirut.
